First edition, 4to (280 x 214mm.), engraved portrait, 2 folding plans and 10 plates, 3 double-page, extra-illustrated with 48 watercolours by Martorana, many with locations identified beneath in pencil, fine contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco, elaborately gilt, gilt edges, occasional browning or spotting, lower cover very slightly rubbed, short tear at head of spine with very minor loss

Catalogue Note
The attribution of these watercolours to Martorana dates back to the original sale of John Dent's library in 1827 (see below). The Martorana family were based in Rome and Sicily and included Pietro (1705-1759) and his son Giocchino (1735-1779). Whilst many of the views are in Rome, other locations include Pompei, Paestum and Sicily.
