Catalogue Note
Famous cartoon map, putting the European powers’ quest for colonial possessions into a fishing context, John Bull (Britain) happily hooking Egypt, while the Spanish bullfighter rues the loss of Cuba, Porto Rico and the Philippines to the United States. The map is dominated by the portrait of the Russian Czar holding out the olive branch, while armed to the teeth and “fishing” in China.
