Oblong folio (295 x 400mm.), letterpress title, five parts each with a divisional title and text leaf, 15 collotype plates, with paper guards numbered I-XV, original cloth-backed printed grey wrappers, puncture marks to title causing minor impression to first few leaves and plates, small chip to title, expert repairs to wrappers, wrappers slightly discoloured

Catalogue Note

A rare publication of views of Amoy and portraits of its inhabitants, including a Chinese fortune teller, Taoist priest, Buddhist monk and a temple of Confucius. This volume appears to be unrecorded, however Price published another work titled Rambles with a camera, or, A series of photographs with descriptive text illustrating the physical features, scenery ... of native life of the island of Amoy and its immediate neighbourhood[c.1893], of which we have located 4 copies (Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Cornell University, British Library and the Bodleian Library, Oxford). The present volume differs in its dimensions and description, and may be a precursor or derivative of this other work.
