Catalogue Note
This album, most likely compiled by someone working for the German company of Siemssen & Co. (established in China in the 1840s) in Shanghai or Foochow, includes 11 rare photographs of Foochow (10 by or attributed to Tung Hing), 5 of Canton (including a 3-part panorama), 5 of Hankow, one of Macao Fort, the cathedral in Shanghai, and Wuchang Bund. The photographs by Saunders include an execution and modes of transport. Other rare images include a photograph of Chinese schoolchildren selected to be educated at Harvard University and a view of the 'Yellow Stork' pagoda in Wuchang which was destroyed by fire in 1885. There are photographs of Siemssen family members and employees, together with views of their buildings in Shanghai and several views of the Siemssen company gardens in Foochow. The album also contains 5 photographs of Egypt (Suez region).
