Catalogue Note

The professional photographs include 17 views of Shanghai (including the jubilee celebrations of 1893), a large factory before and after a devastating fire, a view of Hangchow Bore (October, 1893), portraits of Chinese people, punishments, modes of transport, trades, and other views including the Great Wall. The amateur photographs (silver prints) include many views in and around Shanghai, a boat journey on a river, cricket and other colonial club photographs, military parades and ceremonial occasions in Shanghai, interior views of the Masonic Hall on the Bund, and a view of Shanghai's first department store Hall and Holtz.
