Catalogue Note
Lewis Medland (1845-1914) was a keen traveller, amateur photographer, and Fellow of the Zoological Society. This collection of manuscript journals includes Medland's record of a trip to California and back in 90 days (in clear imitation of Phileas Fogg's fictional circumnavigation of the world), which included stops throughout the mid-West, a visit to Yosemite, and a return trip via Canada and the Great Lakes, as well as a trip to Russia which includes substantial detail about the practicalities of taking photographs in Russia in the 1880s. For Medland's journals of travels in Africa see lot 190.
