Catalogue Note
The rare first edition of this important work, depicting some of the earliest published representations of Mayan architecture. The work of Dupaix and his draughtsman Luciano Castañeda, commissioned by Charles IV of Spain, seems to have been largely forgotten in the turmoil of the Peninsula War. Kingsborough published a translation of the journal in 1831 at the beginning of his Antiquities. The present edition contains a wealth of supplementary and comparative material. The illustrations are especially valuable for their detail as successive explorers burned the jungle surrounding the monuments causing damage to many monuments.
