Bellairs (c.1794-1850) joined the navy in 1809 and was made lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a contract mail steam-vessel and travelled widely. As the present watercolours show, he was clearly gifted, and one of his earlier drawings "View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies" was published as a separate print in 1843. The views comprise:
1. "Richmond Hill Grenada July 1850 - W.T. Bellairs R.N.", inscription on recto (180 x 270mm.)
2. "Caranage [sic] Grenada July /50 W.T. Bellairs", inscribed on verso, and signed on recto "W.T. Bellairs R.N." (166 x 260mm.), short tears at lower edge repaired
3. "Grenada West Indies", old faint inscription on verso (185 x 257mm.)
