"The principal aims of this voyage were political: to show the French flag in various areas in the Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands, China, and Cochin China; to extend protection to a number of French subjects; and to draw up comprehensive reports on the countries visited, including Brazil, Chile, the Marianas, and the Philippines" (Hill).
The complete reports of this voyage are extensive, numbering 14 volumes, but all are seemingly rare. This lot comprises the three volume text Relation du voyage and atlas Album historique. The atlas contains fine views of China (Hong Kong and Canton), Singapore, the Philippines, India, South America (Brazil, Chile and Pacific ports), Hawaii, and elsewhere.
