Catalogue Note

Rare. This work comprises 20 'books', drawing on a number of sources. The first 12 are from Osorio's De rebus Emmanuelis... gestis (first published in 1571) which chronicles the reign of Manuel I of Portugal (1495-1521). The other 8 are from Lopes de Castanheda's Historia do descobrimento (1551) and other authors, extending the period covered to the death of King Sebastian in 1578.

During this time, and described in this work, the sea route to India was discovered, and the key island of Hormuz was captured, giving control of trade between India and Europe through the Persian Gulf, and the foundations of empire laid in Africa, Asia and America. It also includes the exploits of Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, Almeida and Albuquerque.
