Catalogue Note

Rare stereoviews, taken by a photographer who travelled on board the French mail steamer Le Donnai in 1862. This ship was launched at La Ciotat in southern France in March 1861 and after an inaugural voyage to Algiers, departed for Hong Kong in August 1862, calling en route at the Cape Verde Islands, the Cape of Good Hope and Mauritius. These stereoviews show three views of St Vincent in the Cape Verde Islands, two of the Cape of Good Hope, and five or more of Port Louis, including: the harbour, shipping, the customs, the interior of a workshop, and a group of Mauritian people; there are also two stereoviews taken on board Le Donnai. For other photographs taken on the same voyage see lot 203.
