Catalogue Note
A fine copy in original boards with wide margins. "This official account of d'Entrecasteaux's important voyage in search of the missing La Pérouse... was written by Labillardière, the doctor and botanist of the expedition, as d'Entrecasteaux had died during the lengthy voyage. Although unsuccessful in the search for La Pérouse, the voyage was of considerable importance because of the scientific observations that were made and the surveys of the coasts of Tasmania, New Caledonia, the north coast of New Guinea, and the southwest coast of Australia. Labillardière's account of the Tongans is an excellent contribution to the ethnology of that people" (Hill). Also of interest are the 14 botanical plates engraved by Redouté and the first printed depiction of a Black Swan.
