Catalogue Note
A fine set, including the supplement (1812), uniformly bound in red morocco gilt around the time of the supplement's publication. The second edition of this work, as here, is greatly expanded from the first, and has far more information.
"The most complete collection of voyages and discoveries, by land as well as by sea, and of the nautical achievements of the Elizabethans" (PMM). Hakluyt himself never travelled further than France, but he met or corresponded with many of the great explorers, navigators and cartographers including Drake, Raleigh, Gilbert, Frobisher, Ortelius and Mercator.
In addition to significant descriptions of the Americas, the work also contains accounts of Russia, Scandinavia, Persia, the Levant, Turkey, and many other countries.
