Catalogue Note
The first volume of Pitt's abortive English Atlas project which was intended to emulate Blaeu's Atlas major. This volume contains maps of the Arctic, Russia, Poland, and Scandinavia, which are preceded by two world maps: Jan van Loon's Orbis terrarum nova et accuratissima tabula in State II (Shirley 439) and Pieter van den Keere's Nova totius orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula, a revised Janssonius (post 1620) plate (Shirley 504). Pitt's map of the Arctic, A Map of the North Pole and the Parts Adjoining, was possibly compiled by Robert Hooke and was the only original map produced for the English Atlas. The map of Norway is a new plate engraved by Francis Lamb.
