Catalogue Note

Baldaeus was a Dutch missionary to Ceylon (Sri Lanka), arriving in 1656 and staying until 1665, assigned to Jaffna, the Tamil region in the north of the island. This important work details both the Dutch and Portuguese periods of rule in Ceylon as well as describing the Hindu religion.

Baldaeus' work appeared as volume 3 of the first edition of Awnsham and John Churchill's Collection of Voyages and Travels (1704). De Oralle's account of Chile is also bound in this volume.
