Catalogue Note

A rare and extremely decorative wall-map.

Valk wall-maps are of great rarity, as the family was overshadowed by the more substantial cartographic publishers Nicolas Visscher and Frederick de Wit. The finely observed vignette borders create a striking image that must have caught the attention of many a merchant for display in his home or office and exposure to damage as a wall-hanging (as these examples were) has further contributed to their rarity today.

See lot 219 for the companion wall-map of the Americas, and further information on the dating of the map.
