Catalogue Note
This work contains two letters from China: "Avvisi della Cina cavati da una del P. Antonio Dalmeida scritta dalla citta di Sciauchino alli 8 di settembre 1588 a Macao al P. Duarte di Sande", and "Copia d'una del P. Duarte di Sande Superiore della casa della Compagnia di Giesu in Macao... 1589".
"In 1585 the Portuguese Jesuit Duarte de Sande and his companion, Antonio d'Almeida, joined Ricci and Ruggiero at Chao-Ch'ing. Sande... evidently felt that the mission in the interior of China was not likely to prove viable. He was much more interested in [Alonzo] Sanchez's project for the invasion of China or for direct action of some sort... So he returned to Macao in 1588... [and] on September 28, 1589, wrote a report to the Jesuit General on the difficulties confronting the China mission. This was published two years later in a collection of Jesuit letters [i.e. in this work]" (Lach, Asia in the making of Europe, I, book 1, p.302).
