Oblong folio (295 x 387mm.), 62 albumen prints (from 180 x 245mm. to 215 x 270mm., or the reverse), 10 signed 'T. Child' in the negative (4 dated 1875, 2: 1876, 3: 1877 and one 1886), 14 with letterpress captions on the mount from Child's series In and Around Peking, 6 signed in the negative 'H. Salzwedel,' one signed in the negative 'Pow Kee,' occasional captions or numbers in the negative, mounted on card, recto and verso, nearly all captioned in English in pencil on the mount, contemporary black half morocco, slight fading and scattered spotting to some images, mounts spotted, lacking backstrip

Provenance

Augustus Burnett-Stuart (1850-1898), a British artist, acquired during his travels in Asia; thence by descent to the present owner (see also lot 210).

Catalogue Note

A good album of photographs of Peking and regions (30, of which at least 18 are by Child and 6 by Salzwedel), Amoy (2), Chinkiang (2), Hankow (7), and Shanghai (12), together with views along the Yangtze River.

Thomas Child (1841-1898), 'a major figure in the history of Chinese photography' (Bennett, p.411), spent 20 years as an engineer in Peking (Beijing), employed by the Imperial Maritime Customs Service, during which time he operated as a semi-professional photographer. Salzwedel worked as a photographer in China and Indonesia from the 1870s to c.1900. The Chinese photographer Pow Kee was active in the 1880s, and produced images for both Chinese and European audiences.
