Catalogue Note

Rare photographs of the Acropolis by American photographer W.J. Stillman (1828-1901), 'whose career encompassed painting, writing, archaeology, diplomacy, and photography. He knew many of the most important European and American artists and intellectuals of the mid-nineteenth century, most notably John Ruskin... He photographed the Acropolis in 1869 and the following year published his photographs. The individual pictures explore unexpected angles and points of view.' (A. Szegedy-Maszak in Antiquity and Photography, London, 2005, pp.4-7, 148-193).
