Catalogue Note

A fundamental source of information on the Ottoman empire, praised by Burckhardt as "... the only perfect source of information regarding the laws and constitution of the Turkish Empire". Volume 2 gives and extensive account of the Muslin religion and of the rituals associated with it, including details of the two Holy Cities and the pilgrimage thereto. A third  volume was published considerably later, in 1820, by Firmin Didot.

Volume 1 should contain 40 numbered and 4 lettered illustrations on 29 sheets. This copy lacks one illustration, no.13 "Bain public des femmes Mahométanes", which may have been omitted on grounds of propriety. According to Atabey this volume frequently lacks plates 12, 19 and 26 which are all present here.

The second volume should contain 97 numbered illustrations (no.41-137). This copy has 64 illustrations on 49 sheets. Many are unnumbered as they are proofs and an unusually large number are printed on individual sheets rather than 4 to the page as found in most copies.
