Catalogue Note
“Rare” (Legrand and Pernot). “This work has the distinction of being the first English-Modern Greek Lexicon” (Blackmer). Isaac Lowndes spent many years in the Ionian Islands, becoming inspector-General of Schools in 1840. The work is dedicated to the celebrated philhellene Frederick North, who, just three years prior to the publication of this lexicon, had established the Ionian Academy.
