Catalogue Note
A rare and detailed map of Arabia and the Gulf. 'The Persian Gulf portion being largely based on actual surveys can be considered fairly accurate. Iraq in which heavy recent special surveys have just been made should have almost equal value ... Kuwait (except that portion based upon actual surveys) Hasa, Jabal Shammar,Qasim, 'Aridh, Oman, Hadhramaut are the result of exhaustive use of detail supplied by travellers supplemented by months and months of enquiry by local Political Officers. The map of these portions can certainly claim superiority over any previous work of the kind ... The Aden portion is from actual surveys. The Yaman southern portion is from the results of fairly accurate surveys done by explorers with high scientific attainments. 'Asir and the Hijaz and the Ruba'al-khali desert are the result of existing maps. Widyan Dawasir, Wadi Sabai, Trucial 'Oman are from local native information collected from the most reliable sources and carefully sifted, but are to be considered as the compiler's idea of the geography of those regions.' (Notes on the Map of Arabia and the Persian Gulf… compiled by Capt. F. Fraser-Hunter. 1905-1908. Calcutta, 1910, p.1).
