Catalogue Note
James Bruce of Kinnaird (1730-1794) had studied Arabic and Ethiopic and was British Consul at Algiers. Although primarily describing Egypt and Abyssinia, the author also visited Cyprus and spent three months in Jedda on his outward journey.
Murray's Account of the Life and Writings of James Bruce "was prefixed to the second edition of his Travels, published in 1805. It is now reprinted in the quarto form, with considerable additions and emendations, for the use of those who possess only the first edition of the work" (preface).
