Catalogue Note

A rare set of photographs taken at the end of the Herzegovina Uprising of 1875-78, which had been led by the Serbs against the Ottoman Empire, firstly in Herzegovina and then in Bosnia. This unrest in the Balkans led to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and resulted in a severe reduction of Ottoman territories and power in Europe. The Congress of Berlin decided that Bosnia and Herzegovina, while remaining nominally under Turkish sovereignty, would be governed by Austria-Hungary.
