Catalogue Note
A fine and rare Ottoman manual on the training and care of war horses by Ahmed 'Ata Tayyarzade (died 1294 AH/AD 1877). The main manuscript is preceded by a detailed table of contents and ends with illustrations depicting how to feed a horse, calming a horse, riding a horse, controlling a horse having a hysteria attack, healing a horse suffering from various illnesses and ailments, including 'flu, cold, cramp and stomach worms and training horses. Another manuscript version of this work is in the Walters Art Museum (MS W.661) which includes 30 colour illustrations (apparently watercolours), of which 18 are near-identical depictions of the illustrations in the present work, however the present work includes the depiction of a stallion covering a mare, which is not included in the Walters manuscript.
