Catalogue Note

This is the Jansson edition of Pieter van den Keere’s rare world map with four decorative borders. According to Shirley, it “is an undisguised and skilful copy of Willem J. Blaeu’s single sheet world map of two years earlier”. Van den Keere’s map is slightly smaller than the Blaeu, and includes a number of new legends. There is also a long note near the cartouche dealing with the question of whether or not the Straits of Anian and Davis link up to form a northwest passage.
