Description

  • Walker Evans
  • DEFENSA CARNICERIA, HAVANA
  • Gelatin silver print
  • 7 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches
signed in pencil on the reverse, 1933 (Keller 279; Walker Evans: Cuba, pl. 46)

Condition

This early print, on single-weight semi-glossy paper, is in generally very good condition. In raking light, the following are visible: a small sharp crease in the upper left quadrant; and 1½-inch diagonal impression in the lower-central portion of the image, neither of which appears to break the emulsion. The photograph is trimmed to the image, and the edges are rubbed, with attendant chipping and small losses of emulsion. The corners are rounded and bumped. The lower left and right and the upper left corners are sharply creased. On the reverse of the print, '22A' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
