Catalogue Note

This edition of Melanchthon's letter with Eck's response has not been found in VD16, though there are several other contemporary editions listed; M3207 was printed in Basel by Froben in 1519. Eck was a vigorous opponent of Luther, and his Leipzig disputation of June-July 1519, between himself and Luther's supporter Andreas Karlstadt, covered free will, grace, the sale of indulgences and papal authority.

Leo X's bull condemning Luther and his followers was first published in Rome by Mazzocchi in 1520 (Censimento 16 CNCE 40438). This is a reprint of that edition, probably from the same year.
