Catalogue Note

Rare first edition of James' union catalogue of manuscripts, arranged first by college, then by subject. The manuscripts collected by Matthew Parker and bequeathed to Cambridge are included in a separate section under the main university library. Thomas James (1572/3-1629), the first librarian of the Bodleian, compiled this catalogue at the start of his library career; though chosen by Bodley in 1599, his appointment was only confirmed by the university in 1602.
