Catalogue Note

Pope Paul III had been attempting to convene a council since his election in 1534, in the face of opposition from many of his cardinals as well as Francis I and Henry VIII. The Council of Mantua was finally convened in 1536, only to be postponed when war broke out between France and Charles V.  Following objections by the Duke of Mantua, the Council was then moved to Vicenza and opened in 1538, although it was poorly attended: Henry VIII lay out his reasons for not attending in his Epistola de synodo Vicentina of 1539 (see lot 72).

The imprint in the colophon is false: ESTC suggests the book was printed in Germany.
