Catalogue Note
First edition of Donne's first published work.
Donne wrote his treatise in defence of James I's demand that Roman Catholics take the Oath of Allegiance: the 'pseudo-martyrs' of the title are those Catholic recusants whose refusal to recognise their sovereign brought death but not, in Donne's opinion, true martyrdom.
