Provenance

Jacques-Auguste de Thou, armorial binding; Rohan-Soubise library, shelfmark on upper cover and front pastedown; Law Society, armorial bookplate

Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617), the diplomat most famous for negotiating the Edict of Nantes, was also a celebrated bibliophile whose library contained over 8000 printed books. Jean-Jacques Charon, marquis de Menars, acquired most of de Thou's books in 1679; in the eighteenth century de Thou's library passed to the Rohan-Soubise family (whose distinctive shelfmark is in this volume) before it was finally dispersed in the sale of the library of the Prince de Soubise in 1789.
