folio (285 x 178mm.), title-page and calendar printed in red and black, title within a woodcut border with the royal arms at head and the arms of Catherine Parr at foot (McKerrow & Ferguson 68), woodcut initials, modern calf, edges gilt, first 10 leaves (title-page, preface and calendar) and fols. cxxxvi-cxxxvii remounted, tear to title-page repaired, lower corners of fols. clvi-clvii restored, last leaf reinforced, slight browning

Catalogue Note

An early edition of the Book of Common Prayer, one of sixteen editions recorded from the first year of its publication. The final paragraph contains a decree from the King regarding the book's price - that unbound it should cost no more than 2s 2d, followed by a further three maximum prices depending on the binding, whether "forell" (inferior parchment), "shepes lether" or "paste or bordes in calfes lether", the latter being potentially the most expensive at not more than 4s.
