Catalogue Note
Pole's opinion on Henry VIII's divorce of Catherine of Aragon was requested by Thomas Cromwell in 1533; Pole, who was living in Italy at the time, took until 1536 to submit it to Cromwell and the King, who was so angered by it that he ordered Pole's immediate return to England. Pole instead went to Rome, where this treatise was first published in 1536 by Blado; yet this edition, produced by the Italian reformer Vergerio, also includes tracts by Luther, Matthaius Flacius Illyricus and others against the primacy of the Pope, and is thoroughly a product of the Reformation press.
