Condition

The photography in the printed catalogue is slighlty too light. Under naked eyes the painting is in very good condition. It is on its original canvas. Under UV light, the painting appears under an opaque varnish and a green old varnish is visible in the lower part. A tiny retouching is visible in the lower right corner. No other repaint visible

Catalogue Note

Napoléon-Louis Bonaparte, Prince français et altesse impériale, Prince royal de Hollande en 1806, né à Paris le 11 octobre 1804 et mort à Forli, en Italie, le 17 mars 1831, est le deuxième fils du roi de Hollande Louis Bonaparte et d'Hortense de Beauharnais, fille de Joséphine de Beauharnais. Il porte le titre de Grand-duc de Berg de 1809 à  1815, et il est roi de Hollande du 1er au 13 juillet 1810, date à laquelle son oncle Napoléon Ier annexe les Pays Bas.

Ce portrait est une étude préparatoire pour le grand tableau vendu à Paris, palais d'Orsay, le 30 novembre 1978, n°2. Le grand tableau provenait de l'une des résidences de l'impératrice Eugénie. Peint vers 1810-1811, le tableau montre Napoléon-Louis portant le grand-ordre de Westphalie, créé par son oncle le roi Jérôme.
