The painting is in overall very good condition. It appears under a very dirty yellow varnish. It has an old relining, probably from the beginning of the 20th century. There is a hole in the right shoulder of the Virgen, in her blue coat (visible on the image). There is, on the verso, a little patch on the lower left corner which correspond to an old restauration in the blue coat. Under UV light: Under a thick green and uniform varnish. No visible restoration.

L'oeuvre que nous présentons aujourd'hui est une Vierge de Giovanni Battista Salvi, dit Sassoferrato, peintre italien originaire de Sassoferrato, village italien situé dans la province d'Ancône, connu pour ses sujets religieux, notamment ses Vierges. Nous connaissons plusieurs compositions religieuses du peintre qu'il reprend avec parfois certaines variantes.
La composition présentée ici est inédite, nous n'en connaissons pas d'autres versions. Elle se différencie des autres tableaux à deux égards. Le cadrage est ici plus large que celui que l'artiste utilise habituellement. En effet, dans toutes les autres versions répertoriées la composition s'arrête en partie basse et la robe rouge n'est pas visible. D'autre part, sur notre tableau la Vierge nous regarde. Nous connaisssons une autre oeuvre, très différente de la nôtre, où la Vierge a ce regard mais sur toutes les autres compositions du peintre elle baisse les yeux.
Ces deux points font de notre tableau une oeuvre inédite très intéressante dans le corpus de Sassoferrato.
