Description

  • George Nakashima
  • Pair of Cabinets
  • Persian walnut, American black walnut and burl

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist by Robert O. Cash
Wright Chicago, October 6, 2002, lots 114 and 115

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The pair of the cabinets were made at the same and significant attention paid to create a well matched pair. The two cabinets show similar wear. The tops of each of the chests with an artistic gentle free edge and wonderful rich coloration throughout. The cabinets with a few small and minor surface scratches, a few scattered edge nicks and some dings to the lower portion of the feet, all consistent with gentle use. The cases with some minor evidence of sunfading. Each fitted with two adjustable shelves to the interior. A rare opportunity to acquire a pair of cabinets distinguished by superb scale and form that encapsulates the strongest elements of George Nakashima’s aesthetic.

Catalogue Note

IN CONTEXT:
The work was not separated from my father’s life—his clients were his friends.  Robert Cash was an important client who used to live in New Hope.  He often ordered pieces of unusual woods or sizes.
