Catalogue Note
IN CONTEXT:
The sideboard of forged steel and glass was created in 1991 for an exhibition entitled Masterworks at the Peter Joseph Gallery in New York City.
The 1980’s were the zenith of my involvement with forged steel and the sideboard reflects my aesthetic concerns and technical abilities at that time.
One of the reasons I was drawn to steel was the aspect of paradox. With forging, rather than a ridged inorganic industrial material, the context is instead an organic form that expresses motion gesture and transformation.
With the sideboard my focus was on the symbolic aspect of an object and integral with the ceremony of living. This created an arena where we engage and where experiences are shared and memories are established.
