painted after Vasilii Polenov's Christ and the Sinner (He that is without sin) (1886-1887), inscribed in Russian lower left 'Polenov/The Unfaithful Wife', signed and dated lower right 'L. Tisch, 1901', otherwise apparently unmarked, within modern giltwood frame

Catalogue Note

The original painting by Polenov is now in the Polenov Museum, Paris, and a later version dated 1888 hangs in the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg.  A 1908 version was sold, Bonham's London, 30 November 2011, lot 22.
