In 1902, while in St Petersburg working on the commission for the monumental equestrian statue of Alexander III that now stands in the courtyard of the Russian Museum, Prince Paul Troubetzkoy met and, after a brief courtship, was married to Elin Sofie Sundström.  The pair travelled widely together, with Elin also regularly modelling for him in a variety of guises and locations from street attire to kimono, on horseback and at home.  The present lot shows the Princess Troubetzkoy in full evening dress and records an international and sophisticated aristocratic society now lost.  The key to Troubetzkoy's success lay in his ability to so adroitly model the characters of that society, of which he and his wife were central figures.  After twenty five years of marriage, Elin died in Paris.
