The original figure was modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler at the Meissen porcelain manufactory, circa 1769.  Renowned for his large animal sculptures and delicate human figures, Kändler raised the art of porcelain to new heights.  His animals were copied by many factories including Popov, where the factory's particular chestnut brown glaze was used for the dog's distinctive markings.
