Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Phelips of Montacute Co.Somerset probably for Edward Phelips IV, 1678-1734), M.P. for Somerset.  Montacute had originally belonged to his uncle, who left a will of such Byzantine complexity that it was unclear what was left to each of his three daughters; Edward married first the eldest, his cousin Anne, then after her death he married her younger sister Elizabeth, and they bought out the remaining heirs.

This piece is perhaps the "1 Bowl" on "A List of Old Plate belonging to Montacute House", dated October 7, 1844, and describing plate designated as heirlooms by Edward Phelips V (1725-1797); the next item on the list is the epergne recently re-acquired for Montacute House (information courtesy of James Rothwell).
