Located on the River Medway, the Chatham Dockyard was at the forefront of shipbuilding and naval technology throughout its 414 years of operation.  Established by Elizabeth I in 1567 as a royal dockyard, Chatham was responsible for producing over 500 ships for the Royal Navy.   At its highpoint the dockyard employed over 10,000 skilled workers, and comprised over 400 acres.  The dockyards moved to its present location in 1622, where 84 acres are operated as a visitor attraction by the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust.
