Catalogue Note
The present lot was most likely modeled on a series of drawings artist Vasilii Polenov made while serving in the army of General Mikhail Chernyaev in the Serbian campaign and published in the journal Pchela in 1876. See E. Zakharova, V.D. Polenov, Moscow, 1954, pp. 140 and 475.
