Catalogue Note
L.A. Dementeva, noting that the design was first cast in 1877 and that the hussar's uniform and saddle cloth bear the Imperial cypher of Alexander II, suggests that Lanceray conceived of this as a vignette from the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
