Description

  • Light wood (fruit wood?), silver, glass, paper, photograph
  • Height 16 5/8 in.; 42.4 cm
rectangular, the shaped wood frame applied with elaborate silver chased and engraved mounts based on interlace strapwork of entwined mythical birds and beasts, reminiscent of the decoration of manuscript borders, the crest applied with the Imperial crown, the strapwork on the apron formed as a stylized Imperial double-headed eagle, containing a photograph of Emperor Nicholas II stamped Boissonnas et Eggler with wood back and strut, struck with indistinct maker's mark

large and impressive; the silver mount in excellent condition, the surface of the wood frame with some scratching and discoloration consistent with age, a small loss to the tip of the arch at the top of the frame
