Catalogue Note

These six drawings advertising Vladimir Wengeroff's films of 1928 reflect Annenkov’s passion for film and animation. When the artist arrived in Paris, Russian émigré cinema was at its height. Famed producer Joseph Ermolieff of the renowned Albatross movies in Montreuil-sous-bois and Vladimir Wengeroff, based in Boulogne-Billancourt, looked to artists such as Yuri Pimenov, Boris Bilinsky and Yuri Annenkov for set and costume design inspiration before the outbreak of the Second World War. The present lot depicts a character in top hat, who is seen attending a boxing match, a cabaret, a screening of a Walt Disney film and, finally, leaving with a contract in his hand.
