Condition

The panel appears sound. There are some frame abrasions along the edges. There are some scattered flecks of paint loss throughout. UV light reveals there are spots of retouching in the top right corner and one spot at the top left edge; there is heavy retouching to the landscape in the left side and also several areas throughout the figure. Held in a plaster and wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

The short brushwork, scumbled impasto and thin outlines and are very characteristic of Repin's oil studies of peasants, a number of which were painted in the environs of the Troitse Sergeeva Lavra. The Cyrillic signature by Repin lower right is thought to be the earliest; the Latin signature above may have been added by the artist later in life, or by one of his children.
