Catalogue Note
In 1907 a series of photographs were taken of the Tsesarevich in the present costume. A few years earlier in 1905, Makovsky had painted a rather more formal portrait of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, but the appearance of this hitherto unknown and less formal portrait of her younger brother is a great rediscovery.
