Condition

Ingul has some extremely minor craquelure in the middle right near the edge of the frame and is a little dirty. UV light reveals no apparent retouching. Sevastopol is very slightly yellowed and a little dirty. UV light reveals no apparent retouching. Both are held in gold-painted wooden frames. Both unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

According to the inscription on the reverse of View of Sevastopol, the painting depicts the first arrival of Alexei Peshchurov in 1882 on the steamer Elborus. That year, Peshchurov was promoted to the rank of vice admiral and was appointed commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet.

The second work shows the Ukrainian river Ingul, which rises north of Kirovograd and flows into the Southern Bug at Nikolaev. Aivazovsky's 1878 View of Capri from the same collection is offered as lot 3 in the Important Russian Art sale on 25 November 2013.
